Tephrocactus articulatus 'Paper Spine Cactus'
Tephrocactus articulatus
Also known as: Paper Spine Cactus
Pot size: 12 cm
Plant size: 20–25 cm in diameter
Origin: Arid regions of Argentina
With its quirky, segmented stems that resemble stacked pinecones or crumpled paper, Tephrocactus articulatus is a real conversation starter. The segments range from light to grayish green, often textured and occasionally covered in short spines—though some may be spineless, adding to its unique appeal. Whether displayed indoors or out, this cactus brings a sculptural, eye-catching element to any collection.
Perfect for cactus lovers and minimal-maintenance gardeners alike, this resilient plant thrives in sunny spots and doesn’t need much fuss to look fabulous.
🌞 Light
Loves bright, indirect sunlight, but can handle full sun too. In intense summer heat, a bit of afternoon shade is a good idea to prevent scorching.
💧 Watering
Water infrequently—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering even further as the plant enters dormancy.
🌱 Soil
Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix. For extra drainage, add sand or perlite.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm temps between 18–29°C (65–85°F). While it can tolerate cooler conditions, it must be protected from frost.
🌿 Feeding
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed once a month with a diluted cactus fertilizer. No feeding needed in winter.
🪴 Repotting
Only repot when needed—every 2–3 years is typical. Use a pot with excellent drainage and just a little more space than the current one.
⚠️ Handling Tips
Some forms have sharp spines—wear gloves when handling to avoid injury.
